Grenache Mataro Cinsault / Barossa / SouthAustralia
Without any formal qualifications in viticulture, Yelland Papps began making wine for family and friends, they soon realised that their destiny lay amongst the wonderful old vines of Barossa Valley. They also realized they held a passion for the future stars of the Barossa, varieties such as the pastoral Carignan, the proof is in a glass of Yelland & Papps Vin de Soif. Old vines Mouverdre and Grenache with the exciting addition of Carignan, very much new Barossa in an old world way. Redolent of soil, coffee and kirsch, jasmines and violet, supported by refined tannins and judicious oak.

Yelland & Papps embarked upon their ventures of winemaking in the right way, purely for their own enjoyment and for the appreciation of family and friends. They remain dedicated to sustainable agriculture, to a holistic vineyard management and minimal intervention in the winemaking. Vines were established on the Yelland & Papps property in the 1980s, on sandy loam topsoils over light clays.

Grenache Shiraz Mourvedre / Barossa / SouthAustralia
The strapper is a reliable, behind the scenes member of a horseracing team in thoroughbred parlance, a face you're unlikely to see in the limelight of spring carnival. The Strapper GSM is not the showy type either, rather it's a favourite tipple of the winemakers themselves, when they're not imbibing in a chilled riesling or icy ale. Yalumba are very excited about this old world style of Barossa, a third of Shiraz is sandwiched between the understatedly fragrant perfume of Grenache and the earthy, rustic tannins of Mataro, a well bred, strapping and savoury wine.

Grenache / Barossa Eden / SouthAustralia
Often described as one of Australia's unsung heroes, Grenache is naturally lighter in colour than other reds but delivers generous wines with an immense palate. Yalumba is extremely fortunate to have amongst its growers a resource of very old, gnarly bush vines which produce low yields of concentrated fruit. A range of terroir and climes across the different sites, sandy soils, loam and clay, contributes to a palate with greater uniqueness and complexity. A memorable tasting experience unlike any to be found in the more popular Australian styles of wine.

Grenache Shiraz Mourvedre / Barossa / SouthAustralia
Few Australian winemakers have had as much experience with GSM as Yalumba. Their learned team are always very excited about this old world style. Parcels are collated from good Barossa vineyards, separately picked and vinified in small batches, before being aged in a selection of large and small oak vats, puncheons and barriques. All parts are encouraged to mellow and integrate, while creating texture and infusing complexity. Layered and supple, spiced red and black berry fruits are drizzled with moreish chocolateynerss, long and lingering on a finish of velvet textured tannins.

Shiraz Grenache / Sunbury / Victoria
Witchmount are fortuitously positioned within the temperate microclimes of Sunbury, just the right confluence of conditions to yield a style of Shiraz Grenache that's so evocative of the chilly Mistral winds which stimulate vineyards along Vallée Rhône. An equal balance of parts, Grenache is included as whole bunches, Shiraz berries are destemmed, treated to traditional open top ferments and six months gross lees maceration for exceptional richness and integration. A decidedly juicy, cherry flavoured accord of dark licorice tannins, bucolic herbaceousness and sylvan, pastoral grace.

The topical old world accord of Grenache and Shiraz was the first style of wine to be made after the re-establishment of Wira Wirra in the 1970s. It is occasionally released as a special limited edition when the vagaries of vintage permit, the aim being to construct a likeness of McLaren Vale, as it was decades ago, when the requisite accompaniement to such a wine was meat and three veg. Wirra Wirra Original is equally satisfying today alongside paparadelle and porcini, offal and pistachio ballotine or five spice crackling pork.

Mrs Wigley was a particular pussycat who was born at the neighbouring Petrucci residence. Within days her mum had dragged the litter to settle in the Wirra Wirra open fermenters, from then on Mrs Wigley became a permanent feature of the Wirra Wirra cellars. Mrs Wigley, the Rosé, is made by running the juices off, tinted after brief contact on skins, from the grapes, then cold fermenting and bottling early, as you would prefer to do when designing a refreshing, revitalizing pink wine.

From some of the oldest Grenache vines in McLaren Vale, picked by hand at maximal ripeness, gently crushed and destemmed into open fermenters, a portion of whole bunches are included for complexity. A fortnight of ferments are hand plunged and pumped over for optimal extractions. Batches are pressed for malolactic and filled to seasoned French oak puncheons for nine months maturation. Heady and lifted, liqueur cherry and wild raspberry, asian spice, ginger, red licorice and rose petal, all framed by lithe, sandy tannins, a generous, graceful Grenache.

The best of Barossa Grenache, defined by her succulence and aromatic allure. William Bert Scholz was a fifth generation Barossa vigneron, he planted a propitious parcel of Grenache into deep sandy alluvial soils in a loop of North Para River. The merry old vines thrive on the free draining sands and cool gully breezes which drift down from the hills. Her softly textured, licorice tannins, decadent spice and wickedly wild cherry fruits, she's a wine of the most elegant structure and generous length, a big style of Grenache that lingers on a smooth, exquisitely balanced, tangy, fruit filled finish.

Grenache Shiraz Mourvedre / Barossa / SouthAustralia
From the very beginning, Two Hands have been very well received by a healthy stream of accolades. Notable reviewer Robert M. Parker anointed Two Hands as the finest negociant operation south of the equator. Grenache, Mourverdre and Shiraz, Barossa through and through. Buoyant raspberry, red cherry characters with a restrained savoury palate, grainy tannins and delicately integrated oak. A serious food wine that shows what a wonderful marriage these three varietals make judiciously balanced with harmony in mind.

The hundred year old Turkey Flat Grenache parcels yield harvests of the most amazing concentration. Rows of traditionally spur pruned vines, husbanded in the goblet style of Vallée du Rhône, produce around two tonnes per acre, translating into intensely flavoured vintages of remarkable eloquence. Aged in a judiciously toasted selection of seasoned and new French oaks barrels, the wine achieves astonishing balance between tannin and fruit, herbaceousness and spice, all due to determining the ideal day of harvest, selective hand picking and careful sorting of the berries.

The Turkey Flat vineyards are unique, in that the estate can trace their first plantings back to early settlement in the 1840s. The site was acquired by Gottlieb Ernst Schulz in 1865, a successful butcher who established a thriving business. His descendants are still there to this day, working amongst the vines. Butchers Block is fashioned to a crowd pleasing style, Mourvèdre provides the backbone, Shiraz adds flavour, Grenache brings rustic spice and dark morello fruit. Balance is essential, each grape plays a role, yet nothing competes for your attention.

Two thirds Grenache, the balance in Mataro, picked off the Tscharke estate vineyards at Marananga. Preserving the integrity and retaining the eloquence of each variety is essential to the finished wine, both parts are encouraged to enunciate their uniqueness of character. A course of whole bunch ferments adds textural richness and introduces complexity, a separate term of age under seasoned oak permits the wines to mature and evolve as individuals. A seamless assemblage that's highly articulate of Barossa, as both parts express their personal charm.

Cariñena is a Mediterranean heritage varietal which the Torres team resuscitated from the last known enclaves on old vineyards in Chile. The Garnacha Tinta component is grown in a region famous since the time of Roman Emperor Augustus, for producing the finest wines in the Mediterranean. This is a provocative wine for Australian tastes, with gritty tannins, tangy acids and a drying palate in authentic old world styling that's sure to stir lively conversation. A torrid, warming red that goes well with fried sardines, stuffed peppers or Iberian styled pizza.

On a highland farm, the array of barns, stables and outbuildings is known as a steading. Steading GSM has long been David Powell's favourite wine within the Torbreck stable because of the old, gnarled bush vines that produce its core. Grenache, Mataro and Shiraz grown to ancient sites at Moppa and Marananga, Seppeltsfield and Ebenezer, Gomersal and Greenock, perform brilliantly in their own right. When assembled however, their strengths coalesce into a wine of remarkable structure and bucolic grace.

Dave Powell was honoured when good friend Ignatius Chan asked him to make a wine for his renowned Singapore establishment. Powell sourced a unique parcel of old vines Grenache from the devigorated soils of western Seppeltsfield to create Les Amis, a testament to what the most exacting standards of viticulture can achieve. A harvest of the most precious fruit, gifted with purity, intensity and finesse. Les Amis flaunts the poise, concentration and panache, with which only the world's greatest terroirs are bestowed.

The Tim Adams label was born out of a venture to make small oak casks and limited amounts of wine. After three decades of consistently superb vintage releases, Adams is counted as one of the leading winemakers in Valley Clare. Fergus was a neighbour who was kind enough to sell his Grenache to Tim in 1993 during a desperate shortage. Tim quickly realized that what had been achieved through a serendipity of logistics was to have real potential as a full bodied, soft style with immediate approachability and splendid compatibility to good food.

From three old, dry grown bush blocks at Blewitt Springs, planted to a benignant terroir of deep ironstone sands. Parcels are separately picked at ideal ripeness, crushed and treated to a measure of whole bunch or wild yeast ferments, regularly hand plunged in a mix of concrete vats and open vessels, followed by a course of age in seasoned oak puncheons. So very redolent of wild cherry, violets, rosemary and spice, its polished, multi layered palate, lined of loquacious, liquorice tanins, textural towards a lengthy aromatic finish.
